Old Pali Road
The Old Pali Road is one of Oʻahu’s most historically significant pathways, weaving through lush valleys and steep cliffs that have witnessed centuries of Hawaiian history. Originally part of an ancient Hawaiian trail system, the route was a key passage connecting windward and leeward Oʻahu. In the 19th century, it was transformed into a carriage road and later paved as the first modern highway through the Koʻolau Mountains. However, with the construction of the Pali Highway (Route 61) in the 1950s, much of the original road fell into disuse, leaving behind remnants of its historic past—stone bridges, moss-covered pavement, and the echoes of generations who once traveled its winding path.
Today, the Old Pali Restoration Initiative seeks to breathe new life into this storied route, restoring it as a scenic hiking and biking trail while preserving and revitalizing the cultural and historical sites along the way. This initiative envisions a future where locals and visitors alike can walk the footsteps of the aliʻi, warriors, and elders, reconnecting with the land (ʻāina) in a way that honors its past.
By restoring the Old Pali Road, we create more than just a recreational trail—we revitalize a living history, reconnecting the people of Oʻahu with the past while fostering a deeper appreciation for the land. This initiative offers an opportunity to blend heritage, culture, and sustainability, ensuring that future generations can experience the beauty and history of this sacred path.
Through the Old Pali Restoration Initiative, we honor the legacy of those who came before us and reaffirm our commitment to aloha ʻāina—caring for the land, preserving our history, and providing meaningful access for all who seek to walk its storied path.
