Hāmākualoa Preserve
In 2016, Maui County acquired several lots in the Haʻikū Sugar East Subdivision, designating the land as the Hāmākualoa Open Space Preserve to protect its cultural and environmental significance. Malama Hāmākua, a community-driven nonprofit, was established to assist in land stewardship, working through grants, county support, and volunteer efforts to restore and maintain the area. Their initiatives focus on preserving cultural sites, including an ancient heiau, removing invasive species, and reintroducing native plants like ʻōhiʻa and hāpuʻu. Additionally, they aim to create a community garden, fulfilling the original vision set by the Maui County Council to provide organic farming space for local residents.
