Keau’ohana Rainforest
Hawai‘i Environmental Restoration (HER) is dedicated to protecting and restoring the Keau‘ohana State Forest Reserve, the largest remaining lowland rainforest in Hawai‘i below 1,000 feet elevation. Since 2014, HER has been working to remove invasive species, replant native flora, and restore biodiversity within this vital ecosystem, focusing on approximately 30 acres of the forest. Their work includes forest rehabilitation, trail maintenance, native plant propagation, and educational outreach, fostering a deeper appreciation for Hawai‘i’s natural heritage.
Community engagement is central to HER’s mission, with regular volunteer opportunities for those looking to take an active role in conservation efforts. Volunteers contribute by clearing invasive species, maintaining trails, and reintroducing native plant species, ensuring that Keau‘ohana remains a thriving rainforest for future generations. Through hands-on restoration and education, HER is committed to preserving the ecological and cultural significance of one of Hawai‘i’s last remaining lowland forests.
