The Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots organization dedicated to protecting oceans, beaches, and coastal ecosystems through volunteer-driven conservation efforts. Their work focuses on reducing plastic pollution, safeguarding clean water, ensuring public beach access, and addressing climate-related coastal challenges. With a strong network of volunteers and community chapters, Surfrider promotes environmental stewardship, sustainability, and ocean protection while advocating for justice, equity, and inclusivity in their initiatives.

One of their impactful programs is the Kauaʻi Chapter’s Net Patrol, a weekly coastal cleanup effort focused on removing derelict fishing gear from local beaches. Discarded nets and ropes from commercial fisheries drift across the ocean, entangling whales, turtles, monk seals, birds, and fish, posing a serious threat to marine life. Volunteers help collect and properly dispose of this hazardous debris, sometimes hiking to remote and rugged coastlines where the work is physically demanding but deeply rewarding. With cleanup locations changing based on where debris washes ashore, Surfrider seeks dedicated volunteers to support this vital conservation effort.
